Scholarship and Funding Guidelines

The 2020 International SBCC Summit is offering a limited number of scholarships for eligible youth (29 years old or younger) along with students and practitioners from low- and middle-income countries. 

The scholarship application is open. Eligibility and submission requirements are described below. Please note this application will close on December 17, 11:59 p.m. EST.  Applications will be accepted in English, French and Spanish. 

There will be three levels of scholarships:

Level 1: Covers Summit-approved expenses, including: 

  • registration fee 
  • roundtrip airfare 
  • lodging
  • daily subsistence allowance 
  • airport transfer for the event 

Level 2: Provides matching or supplemental funds for money you have raised for Summit-related costs including: 

  • registration fees
  • roundtrip airfare 
  • lodging 
  • daily subsistence allowance 
  • airport transfer

Scholarship awardees in the Level 2 category must provide evidence that they have raised at least 50 percent of the costs needed to attend the Summit. See Funding Your International SBCC Summit Experience for suggestions. Our Fundraising Letter Template can also help you craft your ask.

Level 3: Provides only registration fees for the Summit.

Eligibility for Scholarships

The theme of the 2020 Summit is "Strength in Diversity." This will be reflected in the content and deliberations of the daily sessions and will be considered in the allocation of the scholarships. The Summit aims to cover many different SBCC disciplines and topic areas, have representation from a wide geographic range, be gender-inclusive and have strong participation of young professionals and students.  

The intention of the scholarships is to increase access to the 2020 Summit for youth (29 years old or younger) along with students and practitioners from low- and middle-income countries. 

You are welcome to apply if you: 

  • originate from, work in or are a student from a low- or middle-income country
  • are 29 years of age or younger 
  • will not be able to attend the Summit without a scholarship 
  • have not received a scholarship to previous SBCC Summits (2016 Addis Ababa; 2018 Nusa Dua or 2019 Abidjan)

Submitting an abstract is not a requirement for scholarship eligibility.

Other scholarship requirements:

  • submission of a short paragraph on why you should be selected for a scholarship
  • response to one of three questions related to the Summit sub-themes outlined in the application form 
  • current CV/resume 
  • letter from supervisor/head of department/organization confirming ability to attend if selected
  • proof of residency

The deadline to submit scholarship application is December 17, 11:59 p.m. EST.   

Candidates will be notified via email about the final decision of the selection committee by Tuesday, January 21.

Expectations for all scholarship recipients (regardless of level)

  1.  A daily post on the SBCC Summit app. This can be a comment, picture or probing question. Scholarships recipients are required to contribute on each full day of the Summit for a total of three posts.

  2. A 500-word blog about the SBCC Summit focusing on learnings and contributions to debates. This may be personal insights gained during the Summit or those generated by others during sessions. This blog may be published on the International SBCC Summit website and other online platforms or newsletters. The deadline for this blog post is April 17. Blog submissions should be sent

  3. A short 500-word piece on the next Summit – this may include ideas about topics to be covered, where the field should be going, who else should be represented among other reflections of interested. The deadline for this piece is May 2. The reflection should be sent to
