Sara Nieuwoudt

Sara Nieuwoudt is a senior lecturer and coordinator of the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division at University of the Witwatersrand.

Jewett is an experienced public health practitioner and academic, bridging theory and research with practice. She is skilled in building individual and institutional capacity using reflective and dialogic approaches and is experienced in mixed methods research, grant writing, organizational capacity development, program development, management, and implementation. Content knowledge includes HIV/AIDS, infant feeding, gender, reproductive and sexual health, youth programming and private/public partnerships. She has worked with dynamic teams in Africa, Asia, North America, and Latin America and speaks multiple languages.

She is engaged in applied research, with a focus on HIV prevention, infant feeding, policy advocacy, Non-Communicable Disease prevention, and social and corporate determinants of health and child well-being. She managed an SBCC capacity strengthening component of five-year project in Malawi and is leading a team partnering with South African government to draft SBCC Strategy for NCD and Obesity Prevention in South Africa.Her career goal is to lead evidenced-based and multi-level responses to address social determinants of health, particularly HIV, through capacity building, writing and research endeavors. She is interested in both the design and evaluation of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) interventions.
